Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a celebration of the lives and contributions of family members now departed. It’s about remembering the positive impact that they had upon us, and we keep them alive within our hearts and minds. It’s an incredibly beautiful holiday.

During Day of the Dead, calavera (sugar skulls) are placed on the home ofrenda (alter) or on gravestones. Sugar skulls represent a departed soul and often have the name of the departed written on its forehead. Traditionally, the skulls are made using a paste called alfeñique, a mixture of sugar, hot water, and lemon—among other ingredients.

Giving a person who is both alive and well a sugar skull with their name on it is also a regular custom during Day of the Dead.
